That’s right - Cricket. As an Indian and former resident of West Lafayette, I was excited to hear about the shirts we have been printing for the PCL: Purdue Cricket League. As I learned more about the league, I was thoroughly impressed with its seriousness and complexity. Founded by Arjun Shah in 2007, this league has over 100 members spread throughout 6 teams. The season consists of 5 games and a playoff season - which is known to be very intense (you can check out some of the arguments on YouTube). These guys put a lot of time and effort into it, complete with Trailers and even Music Videos (see below)

Music Video:

Teaser Trailer:

This year the finals of the PCL saw Bullets take on the Spartans, with the Spartans coming out on top. But UGP is proud to print shirts for all of the PCL Teams. Who knows, with a little work this league could be huge! Allen Stanford, eat your heart out.

Indiana University Dance Marathon is the place to be for 850 dancers who have to stay awake (and upright) for 36 hours. For the past 18 years, IUDM has been dancing for children who can’t, raising money for Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. This year, the recently-opened Underground Printing store in Bloomington was proud to help IUDM with all their apparel. Of course, when you’re dancing for 36 hours, you have to have more than one t-shirt!

The Marathon weekend was filled with live performances from area groups, great food from area businesses, visits from the Riley kids and families, and a rampant energy directed at overcoming obstacles—and achy feet—to help children who need it most. When I visited in the early hours Saturday, everyone I saw appeared bright-eyed and excited, as though the long weekend had just begun. It was evident that the passion behind IUDM was bigger than any impending sleep-deprivation. On Sunday morning, at the end of the Marathon, everyone mustered up all their energy to erupt in screams of joy as they revealed that IUDM 2008 had raised a record-breaking $1,376,550.23 for Riley Hospital.

Although Dance Marathon just ended November 16th, the IUDM committees and execs are rearing to go, and have already begun planning for 2009. For around 350 Indiana University students, IUDM is a year-round commitment to bettering the lives of the children at Riley. UGP was pleased and proud to help, and we look forward to next year as well! From our UGP team to the amazing IUDM team, congratulations on your great success for the kids and thank you for letting us be a part of it!

Morgantown, WV, home to West Virginia University and the Mountaineers, is now the newest Underground Printing store to add to the list. West Virginia has a rich history of producing high volumes of coal which power the entire nation. Mining for coal in West Virginia dates back to even before it became a state in 1863, when in 1810 the first commercial mine opened near what would be called Wheeling, West Virginia. Since then many West Virginians have been going “Underground” as a part of their daily lives to provide for their families. With the opening of the new store in Morgantown, West Virginians and West Virginia University now have a safe and enjoyable place to go Underground in Morgantown.

Morgantown was once named one of the best small towns in America. With a population of around 30,000 not including students, the city basically doubles in size when school is it session, and becomes the largest city in West Virginia when the Mountaineer football team plays at home on Saturdays. Some notable people that have passed through WVU include famous actor Don Knotts; notable figures in athletics like Jerry West, Sam Huff, Rodney “Hot Rod” Huntley, Terry and Tommy Bowden, James Jett, Bob Huggins, Marc Bulger, Jerry Porter, Steve Slaton and Pat White; country music singer Kathy Mattea; even astronaut Jon McBride.

The new store is located at 219 Fayette St, just off of High St, in downtown Morgantown. It’s just a short walk from the Mountainlair, the student union on the WVU campus.

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, accounting for 29% of all cancer deaths. Last year an estimated 213,380 new cases were diagnosed, and 160,390 patients passed away. Over 7% of Americans will develop lung cancer within their lifetime, with 84% of those dying within 5 years.

In an effort to change these figures and begin making the strides in treatment many other cancers have seen in recent years, earlier this month UGP helped produce mugs and shirts in memorial of Nick Grogan. Nick was a Chicago Fire Fighter who passed away in February of 2007 as a result of lung cancer. He was frustrated by the general lack of knowledge of lung cancer, and felt that there were not enough people surviving. Through foundations such as LUNGevity.org efforts are being made to raise money, raise awareness, and give support to victims and their families. Please visit LUNGevity’s website - www.lungevity.org - to see tips on how to donate your time or money to fight a devastating disease.

To read more about Nick visit his page on the foundations page at http://events.lungevity.org/site/TR/Events/General?px=1238461&pg=fund&fr_id=1030

UGP is very proud to be small part of this families fight with lung cancer!

Tune in to your television these days and you may notice something different as you TIVO your way through commercials - those blurs no longer have politicians on them. Yes it’s true, another election season has come and gone. Whether your candidate won or lost, we at UGP hope your took the opportunity to participate. More than 120 million of your fellow Americans did so as well. An emerging and powerful demographic has been the youth vote, particularly as campaigns are waged with webroots as well as the grass kind. Mike Pence, an incumbent State Representative from Indiana, is seen here shaking hands with a student from Edgewood Elementary in Elwood, IN. These kids probably won’t be voting anytime soon, but at least they know enough to rock an awesome t-shirt from the Underground Printing West Lafayette store when they are going to meet a local State Rep!

If you got all excited when you saw the title like I did, just a heads up, the cyclotron is NOT the same thing as the carnival ride that spins around real fast and you stick to the carpet covered walls. However, if you were walking around the campus of Michigan State University yesterday, you may have gotten caught up in FRIB Frenzy. Students at MSU got together to spark campus interest in upgrading the school’s cyclotron in a new Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (hence, FRIB). If you didn’t get in on the isotope making, you may have at least seen some UGP made t-shirts like the ones below kicking around campus. MSU hopes the project will bring economic stimulus to the state and continued research notoriety for the University. For more info on the event, check out the State News article here. For more info on radioactive isotopes….i dunno…try….wikipedia?

The new store is located at 818 Clark St and should be open for the start of school in late September. Check out the pics below!

We here at UGP are suckers for a nice RomCom (thats Romantic Comedy for you rookies), so when Mark contacted us about making shirts to help him propose to his girlfriend Lori at the Yankees/Red Sox game July 26th at Fenway, we were falling all over ourselves to be a part of it. Mark printed shirts for his entire section to wear:

Looks like she said yes (note the ugp logo)!

And of course, they put Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore to shame by sealing the deal with a cold one:

Congratulations Mark and Lori - glad we could be a small part of your story!

UGP had its own encounters with Entourage through its customer WeSC. Underground helped produce 35 custom WeSC Boingo Headphones for the cast at the Entourage Season 5 Premiere. Thanks to our good friend Eric Hardin at WeSC for letting us get in on some of the Hollywood fun.
