In college, I had a friend who frequently would enter into a diatribe about commercialism whenever he’d see someone wearing a t-shirt that said “GAP” or “AMERICAN EAGLE” or “MILLER LITE” or some other corporate giant. He would characterize the people as walking billboards or, depending on his mood, make some allusion to them being members of the world’s oldest profession for the coporate world. In a show of support I burned all of my course materials in a trashcan behind our dorm, though the signifcance of why is now lost on me. I think mainly it involved not wanting to do homework.
The internet now has spawned a new entrepreneur who has taken the idea of t-shirt advertising to a new high (or low, depending on the diversity of corporate logos in your wardrobe). Meet Jason (Hi, his name is Jason) of iwearyourshirt.com. He’s a self described simple guy with a simple idea. He’s selling his shirt space to the first bidder; each day in 2009 he’ll be wearing a different company’s shirt. He’ll blog about it, post videos, and generally kick around town in your gear for day. Each day is sold at face value for the day of the year, with today, January 6th going for $6, and December 31st going for a whopping $365. Sound like a good idea? Seem ridiculous? Check out how many days he’s already sold 6 days into the year.
Online advertising is changing and growing with the internet itself. Unique forms of advertising are arising every day as the popularity of commonplace tactics like Google Adwords reach a saturation point. T-shirts of course, continue to thrive as medium online and off. Jason will rake in $66,795 before taxes if he sells every day, and he’s well on his way to that point. Plus he’ll probably end up with a killer t-shirt collection. Unless he ends up burning them all in trashcan at some point.
